editing-

final cut pro effect

This is one of the tutorial i will be using to create a sin city effect,
i will be using this effect to have the storyline in black and white, however make the color Red stand out on its own.

script

Script

Ext. Street
The band will be walking towards the camera. (Blurry vision)
Ext. Forest
Here we will have close up shots of the instruments, the drum kit, guitar and the rest. And introduce the members from the band. They are going to be wearing, smart casual clothes-
I.e. Jeans, white shirts and a black skinny tie, followed with black shoes.
Int. House
(Black and white)
Long shot of the main character walking from a low angle towards the camera. He then enters the toilet. He looks at himself in the mirror and he can see a happy version of him, however the actual person is unhappy.
Ext. Outside the house
He walks out the house; here there will be a close up shot of his legs when he closes the house door from outside.
Ext. Park
There will be a still shot were the camera will be positioned in one place. 2 benches can b seen in this shot. The main character will sit on one of the benches and look really depressed. Few seconds later the same guy ( double acting) will sit on the other bench, with an additional character, his girlfriend. So basically there are 2 sides for this character, one who will be depressed and sad, and the other will be happy and enjoying his life with his girlfriend.
Ext. Forest
Here we there will be a rain effect, close up of instruments and characters playing the chorus of the song.
Int. Restaurant
The main characters from the storyline will be having lunch in a posh restaurant and the shot will fade away to find the main character sitting by himself and having lunch, it will keep fading in and out from both different shots.

Ext. Park
The couple will be seen having fun on the swings, then the shot will stay the same but the scene will change, the main guy will be standing near the swings watching the swings, imagining his past experience with his girlfriend.

Int. Gig location
The band will sing one of the lines from the song near a snooker table standing underneath a spotlight.

Int. Pub
Main character will be seen teaching his girlfriend how to play pool, and on the same shot, the same guy will be seen in the background sitting on the chair imagining the past.
Ext. Street
It will be raining in this scene, the girl will be holding her boyfriends hands walking down the road ,and suddenly she will run under a roof to protect herself from the rain, the boyfriend will follow her and hug her from behind keeping her warm. later in this scene the couple will running into the rain and the main character will carry her and spin her around.int the same shot, the depressed sad version of the main guy will be walking in the background imagining the good times they’ve had together.

Int. Gig location
Close up shots and medium shots of the band performing the chorus of the song.
Ext. Road
Couple will be walking together, here the guy will take the girl into a flower shop and buy her roses and walk out the shop together holding hands, the same scene comes again, however this time the guy buys flowers by himself looking sad and depressed.

Ext. Forest
Fast shots from different angles of the band playing parts of the song.
Ext. Outside the house
This is the final black and white shot, the couple will walk towards the house, open the door and enter the house, following this event, and the same guy will walk towards the door, by himself and knock on the door. Here the colour will change to normal colour. The music will stop; it will be silent for few seconds. The door opens and a new character is introduced as he opens the door. Random new guy opens the door and the girl will be standing behind him. At this stage the main character realises that his girlfriend is now with someone else. The random guy slams the door, and the main character drops the flowers and walks off, here there will be a shot of his legs walking away from the scene. Unexpectedly a car will come from far away and run over the guy.

Ext. Forest
Band will be performing the chorus one final time, in the background there will be explosion effects taking place.

Ext. Road
The main character is dead on the floor and the camera slowly moves away from the character and fades out.

FILMING.-pub scene

we filmed some shots in the local pub in Mill hill of the narrative bit of the story.
overall it went as we planned..however the weather conditions where not as we expected as we were unaware that there was going to be any rain-so we feared that our shots may not come out as clearly, however luckily there wasn't any problems with the quality of filming.

preparation.

in order to ensure that the weather was suitable for the band to be performing in - as bad weather conditions can mean that the videoing effects will not come properly. Therefore, we went on bbc.com/weather to check out the weather conditions and luckily we found that it will have sunny intervals.
we also had to prepare the travelling so we went on tfl.com to make sure we knew how to get to our locations. To be extra careful, we asked a friend that drives if they could drop us to the locations just incase we face any last minuite problems with transport. Luckily they said they could.
this will now ensure that parts of the filming will start smoothly.

Initial Research

Our Artist

Artist: New conscience

Song: "Start again"

Genre: Rock

Artist

We chose the artist and song we were going to use and the possible ideas we could come up with for them. After many thoughts and ideas put in we decided that we would use a band called “new conscience”. They are a rock band who sing their own songs and the song we particularly liked from the variety we looked through is called “Start again”, we all thought the given narrative was unique and there was a lot we could do with it and that the band. We are also going to have a storyline along with the band singing. We will have two other characters for the story being told during the song.
The band that are going to be singing in our music video have a myspace which they keep an account of their latest updates and songs. They have gigs in which they perform their new songs on a regular basis and for our music video we are going to one of the gigs to film.

This is a print screen of their myspace:

Bullet for my valentine - Tears dont fall analysis

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zszz5KsmSz8&ob=av2e

In this music video there is a visual narrative to help support the message that is being sent out in the song itself.

There are many close ups used throughout especially of the lead singer following by a few of the other members in the group.

Toward the chorus the editing goes faster on the instrumental.

The moving shots show that that camera is not still and focused on one thing. Personally, this is why I admire this video because of the dedication and commitment it must of taken to make it.

In the music video it gave me the idea to consider using the rain scene as i think it gives a fierce rock image.
The rain also makes it more powerful and emotive.

The grey and blue lighting used is also very catchy and effective as it makes the video more gothic and pale.

Locations

Before filming our music video we needed to decide on locations to film at. We needed scenes which included a park benches, the inn crowd pub in mill hill , at the top of the bus and the outside of a house However we have separate locations for our band and for these we have decided green screen room for a white background effect, In the middle of a forest and lastly a mill hill gig. We used a new feature of Google maps called street view to save time for looking for our locations on the day itself. We found out that they were going to use the pub for one of our locations for the characters in which we had to speak to the people working there if we were allowed so film and so they gave us permission to film there. However for the gig we must work out where we could film from and eliminate any issues which may arise on the night to do with lighting, power supplies, health and safety etc. We must also plan and work out where we could film from and eliminate any issues which may arise on the night to do with lighting, health and safety and power supplies.

One Night Only-british band image

this is a british band called 'ONE NIGHT ONLY'
again looking at their sense of dress it is easy to see the smart image they represent

The Arctic Monkeys.

This is an image of the british rock band -The Arctic Monkeys.
once again the dressing is very smart.

example's of rock bands image in british. (THE KOOKS)

this is a picture of the Kooks. a British rock band..as you can see it is clear to tell that they have portrayed them selves with a sophisticated representation.

outfits and costumes.

we want the band to wear casual but smart clothes such as a white shirt, black loose tie and black trousers with black shoes. we got this idea after we researched the image of other BRITISH bands we realised that they have a whole new image compared to american rock bands.
for example, the kooks, One night only,Arctic Monkeys and many others. we noticed that they all had a smart image and they do not neccessarily follow the stereotypes of a 'Rebelious rocker' and instead presents themselves in a sophisticated manner if not slightly nerdy.

this is different from american rock bands such as Nirvana,Guns 'n' Roses, and more new american bands such as All american rejects, bullet for my valentine and Blink 182.
They dress more accordingly to the stereotypes about rock music.

After this evaluation, we wanted our music video to follow the convensions of a british rock band as we are using a british rock band and their music.

problems with effects

initially, we wanted to have a rain scene. However as we were doing in-depth planning, we realised that this would be extremely hard to do,as we would have to get the band covered in water. this can be a health and safety risk as splashing them with water in the winter could cause them ending up with a terrible flu or something worse.
therefore we are still planning on another way around it. As in the music industry, for rain effects-they spray the band with warm water and have a caravan close by so at the end of each shoot they can dry themselves up and change into a new pair of clothes.
as we are deprived of such materials, the process is much harder.

Music and visuals

The sound of the song and the effect is has on the listener should definitely be reflected in music videos. In most cases of storyline visuals and song lyrics match however together with out thoughts and ideas we have decided to make the song lyrics a bit different by not having the story go accordingly to the lyrics. As some buts of the song “start again” is quite fast pace we should have a fast cutting rate. A good example of the use of past pace is “ignorance” by Paramore. In this song it is mostly fast pace however there is a slow cutting rate used during the verses of the song, but when the song reaches the chorus, the frequency of cuts increases greatly to reflect the speed of that section of the song. As well as this, an unstable effect is used on the camera in certain places and flashes of white light are also used. We liked the idea of this and may consider using something similar for our own music video.

Things we will need for filming

- The tripod: Very In order to have smooth shots we need our camera to be still therefore we will use a tripod.

- The camera: Obviously the most essential prop item in order to be able to film our music video!

- Costumes: For the band we have concluded that we want them to wear a vest and a shirt on top as it will suit the scene and as for our characters which are performing to the storyline are supposed to be normal people we don’t require any specialist costumes either. we have put together a typical outfit that they may wear .All items are typical everyday clothes because of this the audience will be able to relate more to the characters and the story line as they might wear this type of clothing themselves.

- The tape: Another important piece of equipment as otherwise we wouldn't be able to film our music video!

- Storyboard: we will have our storyboard with us at all times so when we go out there to film as we will know exactly what to do so it saves time. We can film accordingly without wasting any time so in advance we would have all the planning done.

Analysis of music video

Artist: Paramore

Song: Ignorance

Genre: Rock

Locations: The location of this music video is in a small room. Surrounding is dark and gloomy throughout most of the music

Costumes:

Artists: as characters –The band all wear casual clothing (t-shirts, jeans,.) it is all black which can connote that if they aren’t bad, something bad is about to happen to them. Also with their genre and audience, black is a very popular colour.

Storyline:
The video begins with the girl being singled out and ignored by other members of the band. She shines a light bulb that is hanging by a wire, directly in their faces, whilst describing how they ignore her and treat her like just another stranger in the lyrics. The cramped and bare setting emphasizes the inescapable, rising tensions between the band members. The video is intercutted with clips of the band performing in a cramped small room, that appears to be a closet. The performance itself.
Style:

Jump cuts – This skips the movement of the character to further along the sequence and back. However mostly set in a small room.

Fast cutting – used during the climax of the music, this fast cutting between different shots literally moves at less than a second and flashes up images that, almost like a montage and There are many extreme closeups used to emphasize the emotions of the character.

Pausing the music – In certain points of the music video, the music stops and a scene happens that throws the audience off. This, whilst working with all the other effects, forces the audience to remain on the edge of their seats.

Audience research 1

For some of our audience research we used facebook to get some responses and feedback.
When watching music videos what appeals more the storyline or the performance?

Audience research 2

We asked this question to help us deicide which genre to do for our own music video and these are the responses we got, However at the end came to the conclusion to do a rock.

Audience research 3

Another question we asked is where people find majority of thier music from?
and the responses we got were the following..

Audience feedback

We particularly liked this music video by bullet for my valentine. Mostly we liked the rain scene used. We used facebook to ask what people think about this particular video.

Music video

The scene was set in the middle of a forest, this is something which we liked and may consider using something similar for our own music video. The shots used in the music video are mostly closeups of the artists.

forest location 2

this video also encouraged me to have a location with the band in a forest.

forest location

this forest scene inspired me to have the band located in the forest. I also combined the rain scene in this location and felt that it would give a 'tough nature' effect, and as i was aware that we were going to have a scene of the band playing in a gig, that this would make a good contrast between the media represented images of them playing to an audience and a representation of them close to nature.

rain scene 2

near the end of this video, a pipe bursts and water is splashed on the band. this convinced me to have a water scene similar to this one in our music video.

rain effect 1

this video gave me the idea to include the rain scene in the video as i think it gives a fierce, punk rock image.
