our music video

for our music video we have decided to have a narrative and performance shots as we want to stick to the conventions of a rock video. the song is about a couple who break up and it is from the point of view from the male actor, and the pain he goes through.
we have used the green screen for some performance shots. we have also used a local gig that the band played at, as we thought that would fit in with the conventions too.
we have used a variety of shots such as high angle, low angle, tracking, and mid shots to give a better effect. we also used fast paced editing shots so it goes with the quick beat of the song.

music video analysis

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_JQiEs32Sq

The music video i have chosen to analyse is Nickelback- Savin’ Me. The reason i picked this certain video is because i had heard this song on the radio a while ago, and i was not exactly sure what the song was about. When i first heard it, i thought it was the typical love song and so i thought it was a bit cliché. Later on i saw the music video when it was released. Suddenly, my whole view on the song changed. Instead of the cliché love song i thought i was hearing- it suddenly turned into a song filled with emotions and meaning. The video was about a man who could see how long people had to live as he could see a stop watch above their head. Every time i watched the video i always noticed something different that would catch my eye that I’d never seen before.

The band represented their genre of music which was Rock, through the show of the instruments such as the drums and guitars they used. This showed the audience that they make their own music and do not use computer programs to produce a track. The music video was cut into two scenes- showing the band playing the song with the instruments and vocally, and also the story of the song shown. The artists have chosen to represent themselves in a way which makes them seem like a band with deep meaning behind them – as i have previously seen their other music videos and they always seem to have a video which has a twist. This contradicts the stereotypes about rock music as critics complain that rock music less meaning and is just ‘head-banging noise’. However, Nickelback have broken out of this stereotype thanks to their creative music videos that leaves the audience with Goosebumps.

Many close ups were used to zoom in on the face of the lead singer and also the band- this helps promote the band if new fans are familiar to they’re style and what they look like. Lighting effects were used to create a damp and dull studio room. The editing cuts were quick paced showing the cross cutting between the band playing the music and the story being showed of the song. This kept the viewers entertained and engaged into the video.

performance shots

This video is an example of how rock videos use fast pace camera edits. this matches with the fast pace of the song. There is also many performance shots of them at gigs and concerts. In this video it opposes the narrative part of the usual conventions as there is only performance shots, and shots of each band member which is like an introduction to show the audience what each member brings to the band.

rock video analysis.

this song by Avril Lavigne is a prime example of how artists can use music videos to promote their products and themselves.
In this video Avril Lavigne promotes her own clothing line she has called 'Abbey Dawn' and also both her perfumes called Black star and Forbidden Rose. the music video represents her personality- which is conveyed as being crazy fun and rebellious, as in the video she is joy-riding taxis. Her personality can attract many fans her age or younger as her attitude makes her different and many people may admire that. The music video helps show her personality across.
throughout the video tracking shots are used as she is running away from her boyfriend.
In the video there are also performance shots, as in any rock music video.

rock video analysis.

this video by Paramore is an example of a convention of a typical rock video, as it has a narrative and also many performance shots. Rock videos also show a stereotype of rebellion. this can be seen in this video by the name of the album which is promoted on the walls (riot!)
the name Riot itself suggests rebellion and the way it is written all over the walls like graffiti against suggests that it wasn't meant to be there but the band vandalized the walls. The lyrics of this song is about revenge, jealousy and hatred. therefore it also fits with the conventions of a rock video.
however this is one of the rock videos that breaks the convention of having a male lead singer as most rock bands would be male dominated. However in the recent years, this has begun to take a change as more females are taking the leading roles in bands.
The music video separates this band from most, as views can see the that the band begins to develop a trade mark through the lead singers hair. The orange hair has created a theme for the band, as you can see in the video that all the band members will be wearing an orange item. This gives a unique identity to the band.
The video is obviously for teenagers as it is set in a high school and conveys the message about high school bullies. And almost every high school teenager has the fear of being bullied, this video shows bravery and also mocks the bullies and shows how ridiculous they really are. Many teenagers can relate to this video and some girls may also relate to the song. this consequently builds fans, as many teenagers listen to songs which describes their situation as they feel better knowing that they are not the only ones going through the problem. The lead singer dresses in a way that is casual and how most teenagers would dress (simple T-shirt and skinny jeans). The unusual hair also shows rebellion.
As most rock music videos the instruments are shown which enhances the way the heavy beat sound is created. it also allows the viewers to notice sounds they might not have noticed before watching the video, for example, they may not have noticed guitar in the beginning as it was drowned by the sound of the drums, however in the video they may notice the guitar then the next time they hear the song they will pay closer attention to it.
There is many fast cutting and montage editing, this builds up a fast flowing beat and compliments the fast beat of the song. There are many close ups of the lead singers face and close ups of the instruments-again, this compliments the sound and also shows the facial expressions of the singer as it matches with what the song is about. in this video the singer has a tough and angry facial expression which gives off the image of 'don't mess with us' this goes with the lyrics and video of the song.Another reason that there is many close ups of the band is that it brings closeness of the band with the audience, as the lead singer makes eye contact with the camera which is virtually the audience. The fast pacing of the camera movement also establishes the hyper frustrated mood of the song.

Research-Artist Logos.

many artists and bands tend to have a personal logo which appears quickly yet frequently throughout a music video. this builds a connection with their fans as it is only a fan of the artist who are able to identify the logo and link it to the artist. this builds closer relationships with the artist and the fans.
examples are bands such as Nirvana;
The crooked smiley face for nirvana is recognized my every nirvana fans and therefore they feel a deeper connection with the band that not everyone else would have.
Another example is the band All American Rejects;
The 'AAR' logo is also recognized by all All American Rejects fans.
Logos are promoted through music videos which consequently promotes the band/artist.

Initial Research: Forms and conventions of music videos.

forms and conventions of music videos;
the forms and conventions of music videos usually depend on the genre of the artist/band. for example, a rock video will be both narrative and performance based. The narrative part of the video usually involves a story in which the lead singer is involved in, normally with a female where it shows a story of a couple, either in a negative view - breaking up and emotions of hatred or pain, Or it can be a positive view of a couple and their love story.Rock videos tend to have many performance shots of them performing at a gig. for example, a concert, or house party- like in All American Rejects video -I wanna. This builds up an excitement for the fans as they know what to expect in a live gig of that particular band.
The Misenscene of the band is very important as it builds an image and a representation of the song and artist. For example, many rock videos have a dark background, with the band in maybe a small room where the main focus is on the band and their instruments. Rock bands tend to have songs mainly focusing on the emotions of anger, hurt or pain. Therefore their music videos will also reflect that. Alcohol is also a main convention which adds to the props of the video.
A rap video will usually consist of the rapper surrounded by girls and cars. an example of this is the rapper 50 Cent. his videos usually have a large amount of girls and cars. Similarly the rap artist Lil' Wayne also shares this convention. There have been many complaints on the way that rap videos portrays women, as negative sex objects. Rap videos usually contain explicit language and a male protagonist.
Money is also a main theme in rap music videos as it usually has exploited women covered in money and the artist himself showing this off along with his expensive cars. In rap videos there isn't really many narrative shots as a story as such, however there are many performance shots of the rapper performing to the camera surrounded by the sterotypical objects such as women, money and cars.

initial research-role of music videos.

The purpose for this music video is to promote the band and their new single called 'Start Again'.
there are many purposes of music videos. Firstly, it not only promotes the song and the band, but it gives the artist (or in this case, each band member) their own unique identity. For example, when listening to the song, you won't know who played the drums, or played the guitar or sung the song unless you are a big fan and researched it, or went to their concerts and gigs. It is also difficult for the band to break through from being an 'average band' as a music video helps create a perception of each band member, maybe through the unusual hair, or the way they have been represented. For example, from ke$ha's music videos, the media has represented her as a party animal. This may give her the certain target audience she is looking for.
In the genre of rock, there are many performance shots, and in a video it is easier for the band to throw their equipment around, giving off the original 'rock n roll' image i.e Nirvana. This helps builds loyal fans as they are more intrigued of going to their concerts as the want to feel the heavy rock n roll vibe they carry out in their videos.
In contemporary society, music videos are also used to give an image to the song. this make the song more memorable as a catchy music video will promote the song as the audience will make reference. It can be used the other way round too; a catchy song will make the audience remember the music video. It can also make the audience become fans of the artist or the band.
A personal example of this is Avril Lavigne's new song called 'What the hell'. i have always been a big Avril Lavigne fan however i did not particularly like this song. But after the music video came out, i saw how fun it was and how interesting the music video was, from then on i loved the song as i kept remembering the catchy music video that went along with it. it also helped me to understand what the song was about.

Genre - Rock

After researching and looking at different rock artists and their music videos, I have developed an understanding of things that are present in most of this genres music videos. One of the most common things that appear is that the music videos appear to be usually quite dark, but with high contrast levels, to give the video a dark and edgy tone. The music videos are usually incredibly performance based, shots covering the whole band playing, yet focusing mainly on the front vocalist. In our first scene we have used something similar with the band playing but our main focus was on the lead singer.

The story lines of rock music are usually dark, to match the dark sound of the music, and dark meaning of the lyrics. There are also a variety of close ups used in most rock music videos and the makeup done in a way that enhanced their facial features for example the use of black eye liner. The performance it's self usually has a dark tone to it, the performers are usually dressed in completely in black, appearing as stereotypical rock. Some people who listen to it are usually inspired from it and have dark makeup and multiple piercings. For our music video we did not stick to such stereotypes to make it unique and not so stereotypical. Like most music videos we had a strong focus on the band.
There is usually a drum or guitar solo in a rock song. We wanted to make the music video fun and felt that rock embodies this the most. Rock uses a natural and more raw sound in the sense that other genres usually edit the music.

Schedule

We are getting at the stage where we are nearly ready to start filming. After our audience feedback on the questionnaire which gave us an idea on what genre to do for our music video. When planning the filming times and days we decided to start in the morning at 9am. There would be less people around therefore it would be easier for us to shoot earlier in the morning rather than during the day. For the green screen we thought it would be a good idea to shoot anytime because we do not have to worry about weather conditions and other problems that could occur outdoors. We all chose a time that was suitable for us in which we could all attend. Hopefully we can get the green screen done in one day but if not we have the following Friday to re-film if necessary. After this hopefully we can start editing and evaluating the filming process.

Planning

Once we had chosen some our locations that we needed to form a filming schedule which fitted around all of our diaries. We sat together and decided on when we could film each scene, as well as which characters we needed for the scenes. We decided to film over a period of 3-4 weeks. After finishing all the filming we decided to spend a certain amount of time to edit the filming. Everyone kept each other updated every couple of days asking each others opinions on the editing and what kind of effects to use to for the music video. During the planning and editing of the music video we also focused of other products such as the digipack. We researched on different digipacks and this gave us an awareness on the layout so it could give us ideas and help us with our own one. Planning for this involved us collaborating with our research on our blogs of the pictures of the band from their Myspace and then coming up with an idea for the digipack which fitted the band’s image and genre on rock.

Music video progress

The filming was over! This meant that we could spend most of the last weeks editing . We made the decision to move all of our work from Final Cut Pro, although this meant we had to do a lot of our editing again at times due to weather conditions as well as re-film a few scenes.

We will now be able to use more powerful and advanced editing features to produce our music video and tell our story.
We had a storyline present as well as scenes of the band playing. Within the storyline there was one character playing two roles in the same scene. To show that there was a difference between the two we made the character change his clothes and kept the camera still therefore we can do both the scenes with the same character and so when we edit we can place them together. However on the other hand for the band we enhanced the colour for shark effects to the video and for the storyline we used a different colour. This will help the audience differentiate between the story in the song and the band.
The band on the other hand had two locations which includes in the pub and in the green screen room.
The majority of the film has now been edited and the last bit was dedicated to colour grading which helped to enhance our video and in certain places increase the colour to make the video look sharp in certain point when the band are playing. The whole of our group has seen the music video now and we have decided on sections which need to be re-edited and whether we have to re-film anything else.

Pictures during filming..

This is a picture of the main character (actor) we will be using for the storyline.

Music video analysis

In the beginning of the music video there are mostly establishing shots of the location and area. The beginning of this music video is just a brief introduction to the song and there are no lyrics at this point. Soon in the video we see the band in an apartment before showing a medium close up of the lead singer walking down a road. There is a use of a fast cutting rate is used together with these establishing shots to give the audience a sense of the location which is an urban area of new york. When the lead singer eventually starts singing a tracking shot is used from behind. The camera is also tracking the fence in the background however it appears that the lead singer is walking at a faster pace than the camera. This shows his power and control when he walks at this fast pace however after a few seconds the camera tracks at his speed. Throughout the music video the main focus of the video is greatly on the lead singer leaving all of the other members of the band out. However when the band appear in the video together they are seen in the apartment where they are performing the song. The song is deep in meaning and it ends with an over the shoulder shot of the lead singer looking into the distance which gets the audience to think about the song even after the video has finished playing.

For our production we used the idea of this by focusing mostly on the lead singer however to change it we used the other three members from the four and gave them all a chance to be the lead singer throughout the music video. We decided to use the band mainly in the beginning to open the music video and in the choruses of the song. We are thinking of using a narrative which uses actors for the storyline and the band. We used regular cuts from the storyline to the band performing as the Script do in their video.
This is a printscreen of "The Script - We cry":

Research on song

After choosing our song, our next agreement had to be on the locations on where the video had to be shot. We decided that one location should be in a graveyard and woods, as this location is eerie and isolated which may an edgy look to the video matching the tone of the song My inspiration to the song and how the location of the song would enhance the vibe of it came from the song 'Alice by Avril Lavigne where vast majority of the video is shot in the woods however this didn’t work our due weather conditions so we did the scene of the band in the green screen room. Also the location for the storyline would be a in a pub and in a restaurant.
