rock video analysis.
this video by Paramore is an example of a convention of a typical rock video, as it has a narrative and also many performance shots. Rock videos also show a stereotype of rebellion. this can be seen in this video by the name of the album which is promoted on the walls (riot!)
the name Riot itself suggests rebellion and the way it is written all over the walls like graffiti against suggests that it wasn't meant to be there but the band vandalized the walls. The lyrics of this song is about revenge, jealousy and hatred. therefore it also fits with the conventions of a rock video.
however this is one of the rock videos that breaks the convention of having a male lead singer as most rock bands would be male dominated. However in the recent years, this has begun to take a change as more females are taking the leading roles in bands.
The music video separates this band from most, as views can see the that the band begins to develop a trade mark through the lead singers hair. The orange hair has created a theme for the band, as you can see in the video that all the band members will be wearing an orange item. This gives a unique identity to the band.
The video is obviously for teenagers as it is set in a high school and conveys the message about high school bullies. And almost every high school teenager has the fear of being bullied, this video shows bravery and also mocks the bullies and shows how ridiculous they really are. Many teenagers can relate to this video and some girls may also relate to the song. this consequently builds fans, as many teenagers listen to songs which describes their situation as they feel better knowing that they are not the only ones going through the problem. The lead singer dresses in a way that is casual and how most teenagers would dress (simple T-shirt and skinny jeans). The unusual hair also shows rebellion.
As most rock music videos the instruments are shown which enhances the way the heavy beat sound is created. it also allows the viewers to notice sounds they might not have noticed before watching the video, for example, they may not have noticed guitar in the beginning as it was drowned by the sound of the drums, however in the video they may notice the guitar then the next time they hear the song they will pay closer attention to it.
There is many fast cutting and montage editing, this builds up a fast flowing beat and compliments the fast beat of the song. There are many close ups of the lead singers face and close ups of the instruments-again, this compliments the sound and also shows the facial expressions of the singer as it matches with what the song is about. in this video the singer has a tough and angry facial expression which gives off the image of 'don't mess with us' this goes with the lyrics and video of the song.Another reason that there is many close ups of the band is that it brings closeness of the band with the audience, as the lead singer makes eye contact with the camera which is virtually the audience. The fast pacing of the camera movement also establishes the hyper frustrated mood of the song.
