music video analysis

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_JQiEs32Sq

The music video i have chosen to analyse is Nickelback- Savin’ Me. The reason i picked this certain video is because i had heard this song on the radio a while ago, and i was not exactly sure what the song was about. When i first heard it, i thought it was the typical love song and so i thought it was a bit cliché. Later on i saw the music video when it was released. Suddenly, my whole view on the song changed. Instead of the cliché love song i thought i was hearing- it suddenly turned into a song filled with emotions and meaning. The video was about a man who could see how long people had to live as he could see a stop watch above their head. Every time i watched the video i always noticed something different that would catch my eye that I’d never seen before.

The band represented their genre of music which was Rock, through the show of the instruments such as the drums and guitars they used. This showed the audience that they make their own music and do not use computer programs to produce a track. The music video was cut into two scenes- showing the band playing the song with the instruments and vocally, and also the story of the song shown. The artists have chosen to represent themselves in a way which makes them seem like a band with deep meaning behind them – as i have previously seen their other music videos and they always seem to have a video which has a twist. This contradicts the stereotypes about rock music as critics complain that rock music less meaning and is just ‘head-banging noise’. However, Nickelback have broken out of this stereotype thanks to their creative music videos that leaves the audience with Goosebumps.

Many close ups were used to zoom in on the face of the lead singer and also the band- this helps promote the band if new fans are familiar to they’re style and what they look like. Lighting effects were used to create a damp and dull studio room. The editing cuts were quick paced showing the cross cutting between the band playing the music and the story being showed of the song. This kept the viewers entertained and engaged into the video.
